Glass roof installation in a UAE building

A glass atrium roof — flooding the interior with natural light while maintaining full weather protection.

A glass roof or skylight is one of the most dramatic ways to transform the quality of light inside a UAE property. Natural light from above is softer, more diffuse, and more flattering than side-lighting from windows — and it reaches deep into a floor plan that perimeter windows cannot illuminate. Whether you want a skylight above a stairwell, a glass atrium in a luxury villa, or a ridge lantern over a kitchen-diner, Diamond Step® designs and installs glass roofing systems across the UAE with 18 years of experience.

Types of Glass Roof Systems in UAE

Flat Skylight

A single-plane glass panel or multi-panel system set into a flat or low-pitch roof. The simplest and most cost-effective glass roof type. Available in fixed, opening (smoke vent or ventilation), or motorised opening configurations. Very common in UAE residential and commercial rooftop applications.

Pyramid Skylight

Four glass panels meeting at a central apex point. Self-draining, structurally elegant, and dramatic from below. Popular over UAE villa entrance halls, staircases, and circulation spaces. Available in any footprint size from 600mm x 600mm upwards.

Ridge / Lantern Skylight

A long, spine-like glass structure running along the ridge of a roof. Ideal over kitchen-diner extensions, living rooms, and open-plan spaces where a line of overhead light is needed rather than a point source. Popular in UAE villa extensions.

Structural Glass Atrium

A large, engineered glass roof spanning a full internal atrium or courtyard. Used in luxury villas, hotel lobbies, shopping centres, and office buildings. Requires full structural engineering. The glass is supported by an aluminium or steel framework hidden within the overall structure.

Walk-On Glass Floor / Roof

Structural glass panels that can be walked on — used for glass floors over basements or lower floors, and glass terraces. Requires specialist anti-slip surface treatment and structural laminated glass (typically 3 x 10mm laminated).

Glass Specification for UAE Roofs

Overhead glass must always be laminated — if it cracks, fragments must be retained by the interlayer. Typical UAE roof glazing specification:

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of glass is used for roofs in UAE?
Laminated toughened glass is mandatory for overhead glazing — minimum 2 x 6mm (13.5mm total) with PVB interlayer. Low-E coating is strongly recommended. If broken, laminated glass holds together preventing dangerous falling fragments.
How do you prevent a glass roof from overheating in UAE?
Three measures: Low-E coated glass (reflects 60–75% of solar heat), adequate ventilation (ridge vents or mechanical), and optional external shading (retractable blinds or louvres). A well-designed glass roof with all three is comfortable year-round in UAE.
How much does a skylight cost in Dubai?
Flat skylight: AED 1,500–3,000 per m². Pyramid over a stairwell: AED 6,000–14,000 complete. Ridge lantern: AED 8,000–18,000. Walk-on glass: AED 4,000–8,500 per m².
