Types of Fly Screen Systems for UAE
Fixed Aluminium-Framed Fly Screen
The simplest and most cost-effective option — an aluminium frame with fibreglass or aluminium mesh, custom-made to fit your window opening exactly. It fits to the outside of the window frame using spring-loaded pins or a channel system, and is a common fit across UAE apartments and villas on casement and fixed windows.
Retractable Roller Fly Screen
The screen rolls up into a cassette mounted above or to the side of the window when not in use, so it disappears completely when open. It's one of the more popular upgrades in UAE villa renovations, available for both windows and large sliding door openings, and it keeps the view unobstructed whenever it's not needed.
Pleated Concertina Fly Screen
Folds accordion-style to one side when not in use, which makes it particularly useful for wider openings such as bifolding doors and large windows where a roller system would be impractical. The mesh folds neatly and takes up very little space when parked, and it's a common choice in UAE F&B and hospitality settings that need to screen large door openings without losing floor space.
Magnetic Fly Screen
Adheres to the frame with magnets, so no drilling is required, and splits in the middle for easy pass-through. It's a popular choice in UAE apartment rentals where the tenant cannot modify walls or frames, and it works best on smaller windows where a precision fit matters less.
Mesh Types: Fibreglass vs Aluminium vs Stainless
- Fibreglass mesh — most popular in UAE. Rust-proof, flexible, easy to repair, excellent for coastal environments. Standard in most residential applications.
- Aluminium mesh — stronger and more rigid than fibreglass. Better for pets or children who lean against screens. Can corrode in very high-salt coastal environments without anodising.
- Stainless steel mesh (security screen) — 304 or 316 grade stainless mesh welded to a heavy aluminium frame. Provides both insect protection and security. Popular in UAE ground-floor apartments and villas.
- Pet-resistant mesh — heavy-duty coated polyester mesh, significantly stronger than standard fibreglass. Resists scratching from dogs and cats.
