Aluminium doors need mild soap-and-water cleaning, regular track clearing, and periodic hardware lubrication — that's essentially it. Aluminium itself is low-maintenance by design, but Gulf conditions add two specific pressures most maintenance advice written for other climates doesn't cover: fine dust that works into tracks and hardware, and UAE heat that ages rubber seals faster than the frame.
Cleaning the Frame
Wipe aluminium door frames with mild soap and water. Avoid abrasive scourers, steel wool, or solvent-based cleaners — all of them can dull or strip the powder-coated finish that protects the aluminium underneath, which then leaves the frame more exposed to the coastal salt air present across most of the UAE. Rinse residue away rather than wiping it dry with a rough cloth, which can leave fine scratches over repeated cleaning.
Track and Hardware Care
Fine dust is the single most common reason a sliding or bifolding aluminium door starts to stick, drag, or feel heavier to operate. Clear the track with a vacuum brush attachment or a soft brush roughly monthly during the dustier months (typically June to September), and always after a sandstorm or shamal wind event.
- Lubricate hinges, rollers, and locking mechanisms periodically with a light silicone-based lubricant — avoid petroleum-based products, which attract more dust than they repel.
- Check the door still closes flush and locks smoothly — a door that's started to drag on its track is easier and cheaper to adjust early than after the hardware has worn further.
- Inspect weatherseals annually — the rubber gasket around the frame typically ages faster than the aluminium itself under UAE heat, and a failed seal lets dust and heat in even when the door and frame are otherwise in good condition.
